Could Daniel Jones be Steelers’ “next best thing” at QB?

The Pittsburgh Steelers may have found themselves a surprise quarterback candidate as the offseason unfolds.

Reports have surfaced indicating that Daniel Jones, the former New York Giants and current QB of the Minnesota Vikings, is gaining interest from within the Steelers organization.

Why Jones could land in Pittsburgh during free agency

Jones, 27, is set to become a free agent after a tumultuous 2024 season, which saw him leave the Giants mid-year after another disappointing campaign.

His brief stint with the Minnesota Vikings didn’t see any game action, but it seems Jones could soon have another opportunity to compete for a starting job-this time in Pittsburgh.

According to sports radio host Andrew Fillipponi, the Steelers are eyeing Jones as a potential addition.

Fillipponi shared on social media, “There’s interest in former Giants QB Daniel Jones inside the Steelers organization… [The Steelers] could do a lot worse than Jones.”

He also noted Jones’s ability to fit into head coach Mike Tomlin’s offense, highlighting his mobility-a trait Tomlin has long coveted in his quarterbacks.

With uncertainty surrounding their current QB situation, the Steelers are exploring all options.

While Justin Fields remains their primary target, the team is not ruling out other possibilities, including Jones.

Given the unsettled nature of contract talks with Fields, the Steelers may look to bring in an experienced passer like Jones to shore up their depth chart.

Jones’s recent performance has been underwhelming, ranking 26th among qualifying quarterbacks in key metrics this past season.

However, at just 27 years old, he has the potential to develop further.

His mobility, evidenced by 2,179 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns over six seasons, makes him an intriguing option for a Steelers team that values a dual-threat quarterback.

For Jones, a fresh start could be the perfect opportunity to improve on his 24-44-1 career record and prove himself as a capable starting quarterback.

His next contract could be worth around $13.3 million, likely on a one-year “prove-it” deal.

As the Steelers continue to assess their quarterback future, Jones is just one of several names on the radar.

With Justin Fields, Aaron Rodgers, and Russell Wilson also in the mix, the QB situation in Pittsburgh is one to watch as the offseason heats up.
