In the Indiana Fever’s recent win over the Seattle Storm, star guard Caitlin Clark left the game with what would later be diagnosed as a groin injury. But someone in the stands that day noticed something else-something that could become a bigger concern for Clark and her team.
Sue Bird, living legend of the WNBA, observed an issue that might be forcing Clark to carry more than her fair share of the load during games. Bird attended the matchup in person and watched as Indiana came away with the victory.
I got to watch Caitlin play in person in Seattle and one thing I noticed was it would be really beneficial for her if she had players around her who could create shots for her,”… “She has to create a lot of her own shots, but she’s also creating for her teammates. And there are times where if she could just get some open looks off other people’s play it could be really beneficial to her. And that’s where Arie McDonald might have some impact.
Bird shared her thoughts on her podcast, Bird’s Eye View.
Road struggles for Clark
Things haven’t gone as expected for Caitlin Clark when playing on the road. Her shooting percentages away from home have been disappointing-just 3 field goals made on 13 attempts, and only 1 of 28 from three-point range.
Moves that could help Indiana Fever
Athletes are often protective of their playing styles, and coaches are even more so with their systems. Still, there may be adjustments that head coach Stephanie White could make.
The departure of DeWanna Bonner and the recent addition of Arie McDonald could prove helpful in addressing some of the team’s weak spots. McDonald’s ability to create plays may ease some of the pressure currently falling on Clark.
Caitlin Clark named All-Star Game captain
Recently, the WNBA confirmed the fan-voted captains for the upcoming All-Star Game, and Caitlin Clark leads the list. With over 1.3 million votes, she was the top selection by a wide margin.
There’s no doubt she’s the most beloved player in the league right now. Napheesa Collier came in second, with about 100,000 votes fewer, but both received overwhelming support from fans.
Recovering from injuries
At present, Caitlin Clark has missed five games due to injuries, with the most recent being the groin strain she’s currently rehabbing. She’s taking it slowly, aiming for a full recovery rather than rushing back and risking further complications.
Her presence is sorely missed by her teammates on the court. But getting back to 100% is crucial-not only for her long-term health, but also to ensure she’s fit to play in the All-Star Game scheduled for July 19 in Indiana.
