Cooper Kupp’s gone, but the Rams strike back with a Super Bowl-winning WR, leaving rivals shaking

The Los Angeles Rams have made another strategic move this offseason, signing Super Bowl champion Britain Covey to a one-year contract. Covey, a former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver and punt returner, is expected to bolster both the Rams’ special teams and offensive depth heading into the 2025 NFL season.

Covey, 28, played three seasons with the Eagles, where he was primarily utilized as a special teams returner. He led the NFL in punt return yards in 2023 with 417 yards, totaling 771 punt return yards throughout his tenure with Philadelphia. Though he was used sparingly as a receiver, Covey remained a reliable asset in field position battles for the Eagles. His 2024 season was cut short after suffering a neck injury during a December game against the Baltimore Ravens, forcing him to miss the team’s eventual Super Bowl 59 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Rams’ wide receiver unit will look vastly different this season following the departure of franchise legend Cooper Kupp. The Super Bowl 56 MVP was released in a cap-saving move and later signed with the Seattle Seahawks. To fill that void, the Rams landed future Hall of Famer Davante Adams, who joined on a two-year deal after being released by the New York Jets. Additionally, Los Angeles selected Konata Mumpfield, a wide receiver out of Pittsburgh, in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

A champion can help a winning team

Covey’s experience as a return specialist will likely provide a much-needed boost to the Rams’ special teams unit, which struggled last season. During his college career at Utah, Covey earned three First-team All-Pac-12 selections and led the conference in punt return yards in both 2020 and 2021, scoring three punt return touchdowns in that span. His ability to navigate tight spaces and create additional yardage will be a valuable asset for head coach Sean McVay’s squad.

While Covey has been recognized more for his special teams contributions, it remains to be seen how much of a role he will play in the Rams’ offensive schemes. His NFL career receiving stats-11 receptions for 76 yards-suggest he will primarily be used as a return specialist rather than a focal point in the passing game. However, if given the opportunity, Covey could prove to be a useful rotational piece in certain packages.

The Rams’ acquisition of Covey signals a strong commitment to improving special teams efficiency while maintaining depth at the wide receiver position. As training camp approaches, the coaching staff will assess how he fits within their system, ensuring he is ready to contribute when the 2025 season kicks off. If Covey remains healthy, he has the potential to be a key playmaker for Los Angeles.
