Cooper Flagg’s 51 point night sparks Luka Doncic comparisons in Dallas Mavericks rebuild

At just 19 years old and in his rookie season, Cooper Flagg delivered one of those performances that instantly becomes a league-wide talking point and puts him under the spotlight. His 51 points against the Orlando Magic not only marked his best game as a rookie, but also sparked inevitable comparisons to what Luka Doncic once represented for the Dallas Mavericks especially now that he’s shining at a high level with the Lakers.

Doncic was the face of the Mavericks for years, a player capable of taking over games and delivering historic nights, even if they didn’t ultimately end in a championship as many had hoped. His departure shocked the entire NBA and left Dallas in a difficult position, forced to rebuild without its star while looking ahead to the draft.

Cooper Flagg the new Luka Doncic in the Mavericks

That’s where Flagg came in as one of the Mavericks’ top draft selections. His profile created strong expectations, but what he’s showing in his first year is already backing them up. It’s not just the scoring, it’s how he gets it done, the impact he has in every phase of the game, and the way he carries himself off the court.

The game ended in a 138-127 loss for Dallas, but at times the result felt secondary. Flagg’s offensive explosion took over the spotlight and gave the team something it needed: a clear sign of the future, along with a sense of locker room unity highlighted by the water celebration that caught him by surprise.

Right now, Dallas is going through a tough season with a 24-53 record, well outside the playoff picture in the Western Conference. A postseason run isn’t in sight, but that also allows the organization to look beyond the present and focus on development moving forward.

Flagg is not and doesn’t need to be Doncic. His path is different, even if the expectations feel similar. But nights like this show he has the potential to become the centerpiece of the franchise and eventually its new face, just as Doncic once was.

And as the Mavericks search for their identity again, Cooper Flagg’s impact is starting to feel real not as a direct replacement, but as the beginning of a new era that is slowly taking shape with him leading the way.
