Cooper Flagg sits in LeBron James’ table in an unexpected way

Cooper Flagg keeps on achieving milestones during his first season as an NBA star. On Wednesday night, he delivered another efficient performance for the Dallas Mavericks that helped lift the team to a 118-108 victory over the Miami Heat. That win became the Mavericks’ third straight victory, placing the 18-year-old in rare statistical company alongside LeBron James.

Flagg finished the game with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting, along with six rebounds, two assists, and a steal and a block in 31 minutes. The performance extended his streak of scoring at least 20 points to three consecutive games, something reached by only two players aged 18 or younger in league history: Flagg and LeBron James.

Just what the Dallas needed

The Mavericks, who started the season with some early doubts, improved to a 8-15 with the win. Despite remaining well below .500, the team has shown signs of progress during this recent stretch. Flagg’s need for quick development has played a key role, but he is not the only factor in Dallas’ recent upgrade.

Anthony Davis, recently back from injury, contributed 17 points and 17 rebounds, providing stable performances upcourt. Rookie guard Ryan Nembhard also added 15 points and 13 assists, continuing his steady development as a facilitator.

The tough road ahead

Dallas’ future schedule sees one of its most difficult tests of the season in its next outing, as it travels to take on the 21-1 Oklahoma City Thunder, who enter the matchup on a 13-game winning streak. Oklahoma City, the reigning NBA champion, has been dominant in its home stadium, making Friday’s game a key challenge for the Mavericks to prove their development to the entire league.

Flagg’s recent performances have turned the expectations for the teenager into a reality, as he has now matched James in an early-career scoring feat rarely achieved by mortals. As the Mavericks attempt to climb back into contention, his continued growth will be central to the team’s hopes moving forward.
