For much of the NBA season, the Rookie of the Year conversation has centered on Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick and the centerpiece of the Dallas Mavericks‘ future.
But as the schedule grinds on, one of Flagg’s former Duke teammates is making it clear the race is far from settled. Charlotte Hornets forward Kon Knueppel has emerged as the most consistent challenger, pairing strong production with an approach that has helped him withstand the demands of his first professional season.
Knueppel and Flagg have followed remarkably similar paths so far. Both have excelled statistically, both rank at the top of the league’s Rookie Ladder, and both have largely avoided the durability concerns that often derail first-year players. Each has missed only one game, a reflection not just of good fortune, but of how they manage the nightly wear and tear of an 82-game season.
Kon Knueppel has become a good surprise
That mindset is something Knueppel takes seriously. Rather than reacting to every minor ache, he has focused on preparing his body to perform every night, a habit that has allowed him to stay available while maintaining a high level of play. The approach mirrors Flagg’s, who has spoken openly about learning how to manage fatigue while adjusting to the physical and mental grind of the NBA.
On the court, Knueppel’s case for Newcomer of the Year is built on production and versatility. Through mid-January, the former No. 4 overall pick is averaging 19.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists, numbers that put him on equal scoring footing with Flagg. While his three-point shooting has dipped recently, Knueppel has continued to impact games by scoring at all three levels and by playing within the flow of the offense.
That comfort has not gone unnoticed by opposing coaches. Los Angeles Clippers coach Ty Lue recently praised Knueppel‘s poise, pointing out his ability to control tempo, score from anywhere on the floor and avoid forcing plays. For a rookie on a developing Hornets roster, that composure has been a stabilizing presence and a key reason Charlotte has remained competitive on many nights.
The NBA pace is unforgiving
The timing of Knueppel‘s surge is also notable. As the league approaches the point where many rookies hit the so-called “rookie wall,” his durability and steady production stand out. The NBA calendar has been unforgiving, with games coming in rapid succession and rest at a premium, yet Knueppel has shown little sign of slowing down.
Flagg still holds the top spot on the rookie ladder, backed by his all-around game and growing influence in Dallas. But Knueppel’s ability to match him statistically while staying on the floor keeps the race tight. As former teammates now charting separate paths, their parallel success has turned the Rookie of the Year conversation into one of the season’s most compelling storylines.
With months still left in the regular season, consistency may decide the award. If Knueppel continues to produce at this level and navigate the grind as effectively as he has so far, the Hornets rookie will remain a legitimate threat to overtake Flagg and claim the league’s top newcomer honor.
