After a disappointing NBA Summer League debut, Cooper Flagg didn’t waste time rewriting the narrative. The Dallas Mavericks’ No. 1 overall pick erupted for 31 points in just 31 minutes on Saturday night, leading a strong individual performance despite his team’s 76-69 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

In his first Summer League game on Thursday, Flagg struggled to find rhythm, finishing with 10 points on 5-for-21 shooting. He candidly called it “one of the worst games” of his career.

But just two days later, the 18-year-old rookie reminded everyone why he was the top selection in the 2025 NBA Draft.

Flagg’s all-around game shined against San Antonio. He hit 10 of his 20 shots from the field, including three three-pointers and eight free throws. In addition to his scoring burst, he grabbed four rebounds and played with noticeable energy and focus on both ends of the floor.

His performance came in a marquee matchup against Dylan Harper, the No. 2 overall pick, who also impressed with 16 points and six rebounds in just 19 minutes. The clash of top picks drew attention from fans and media alike, as both young stars delivered strong outings in only their second games at the professional level.

Flagg makes his statement

Flagg’s poise, offensive variety, and improved decision-making from game one to game two were clear signs of progress. He showcased the versatile skill set that made him the consensus No. 1 prospect entering the draft-knocking down threes, finishing through contact, and defending multiple positions.

Though the Mavericks lost, Flagg’s individual showing generated excitement about his potential impact in the NBA. Social media buzzed with reactions praising his bounce-back game, and analysts noted how quickly he adjusted to the pace and physicality of Summer League play.

The improvement between games suggests Flagg is not only physically gifted but also mentally resilient-key traits for a franchise cornerstone. Head coach Jason Kidd and the Mavericks’ staff have emphasized development and patience, but Flagg is already showing signs of being ahead of schedule.

Up next for Flagg and the Mavericks is a Monday matchup against the Charlotte Hornets, featuring his former Duke teammate Kon Knueppel, the No. 4 overall pick. The reunion adds another layer of intrigue to a Summer League that has already offered a glimpse of the NBA’s future stars.

Cooper Flagg may have stumbled out of the gate, but his response was emphatic. In just one game, he reminded everyone why he’s expected to be the face of the Mavericks for years to come.
