Cooper Flagg has officially declared himself eligible for the 2025 NBA Draft, and it is a fact that the Duke Blue Devils star will be the first overall pick. Under this scenario, we enter a stage of speculation about what the destination of the Naismith National Player of the Year will be because we do not have certainty about which team will choose him, as the draft lottery has not yet taken place, and it is scheduled for May 12.
Flagg and Wembanyama together? The Spurs would be a super team
Now, an NBA insider at ESPN, Bobby Marks, has raised the idea of the former Duke player playing for the San Antonio Spurs, which would be crazy to see him play alongside another generational talent like Victor Wembanyama.
“Well, it’s gonna upset the teams-Washington [Wizards], Charlotte [Hornets], New Orleans [Pelicans]-Because I’m gonna say San Antonio,” Marks said during BNA Today. “If you pair Cooper Flagg with Victor Wembanyama, and you pair him with De’Aaron Fox-that is a formidable big three. And certainly from a defensive standpoint.
“And I think we forget, they got two cracks. They got that Atlanta pick too at 14! So, they can go 8 and 14 and maybe jump up there to the top pick there,” he added.
Of course, it would be spectacular for fans to see Flagg included alongside the French player and De’Aaron Fox. However, luck would have to smile on them greatly for this to happen.
The San Antonio Spurs finished with the eighth-worst record in the NBA during the 2024-2025 season, and they have only a 6% chance of obtaining the number one pick. There are seven other teams with better odds, although the Spurs technically have two chances, as they also own Atlanta’s first-round pick in 2025, as a result of the Dejounte Murray trade in 2022.
The most likely scenario for the team is that they make their selections at the eighth and 14th spots in the Draft, but it doesn’t hurt to dream because anything can happen in the lottery.
