The Indianapolis Colts’ recent move to bring 44-year-old veteran Philip Rivers out of retirement has brought a wide debate surrounding Colin Kaepernick and his continued exclusion from the NFL. Despite reports about a surprising comeback for Kaepernick amidst the Colts’ quarterback struggles, the team opted for the familiar experience of Rivers.
This decision generated a reaction fromKaepernick’s wife, Nessa Diab, who publicly questioned the league’s logic, talking about the persistent belief that her husband is being unfairly denied a chance, even in a backup capacity.
Nessa Diab makes her call on Instagram
Nessa shared her frustration on her Instagram account, openly criticizing the Colts’ choice as she reshared a reel. In it, the fan in the video acknowledged the practical reasons for choosing a veteran like Rivers. hte post was ultimately used by Nessa to draw attention back to Kaepernick’s situation.
Nessa’s caption underscored her loyalty and frustration: “YUP! Still with you @kaepernick7 #imwithkap #stillwithkap I don’t know the person in the video – I’m just thankful he cared to share his thoughts. THANK YOU!“
By resharing the video, Nessa spotlights the glaring contradiction many see in the NFL’s choices. She cannot believe that a team is prioritizing an aging, retired quarterback over a younger, consistently training athlete who has openly stated his willingness to accept a backup role.
A reason beyond performance?
The frustration expressed by Nessa and the fan stems from the, for her, continued exclusion of Colin Kaepernick, whose last official NFL season was in 2016. His willingness to return, mixed with his continuous training, makes his absence hard for supporters to accept when less experienced or retired options are into consideration before him.
“And can somebody take a chance on Colin Kaepernick as a backup quarterback? Like that is just crazy to me that with these awful backup quarterbacks that Colin Kaepernick cannot still get any burn in the NFL. And people will still say that he wasn’t whiteballed. Shame on you. You know he was,” the fan charged.
That is why Indianapolis Colts’ decision to bring back Philip Rivers only deepens the conviction among Kaepernick’s supporters that the obstacles keeping him out of the league are not based on talent or fit, but rather extras beyond the game itself.
