Colin Kaepernick receives unexpected help in his attempt to return to the NFL: We will listen to him

Nearly nine years removed from his last NFL snap, Colin Kaepernick may finally have a lifeline back to professional football, thanks to an unexpected overture from the United Football League (UFL).

Doug Whaley, the UFL’s senior vice president of player personnel, confirmed that the league stands ready to listen if Kaepernick reaches out-and could provide a platform for a potential NFL return.

Whaley’s remarks came in an interview with TMZ Sports on September 1, 2025. Though Kaepernick hasn’t made contact yet, Whaley made the message clear: “He knows we’re here, so if he really wants it, we would listen. It’d cost us nothing to listen.”

He added that other avenues, such as the Canadian Football League (CFL), are also available if Kaepernick wants to compile recent game footage and revive his on-field profile.

UFL’s invitation revives comeback hopes

For Kaepernick-who last played in the NFL in 2016 following his anthem protest and became media-adjacent-this is more than just interest; it’s validation.

The UFL, launched in 2024 as a spring developmental league, specializes in giving players a second chance to refine their skills and earn another shot at the NFL.

Whaley’s statement paves the way for Kaepernick, offering both an active playing opportunity and visibility.

While many doors remained closed within the NFL, this open invitation could change Kaepernick’s narrative-not by media buzz, but with actual gameplay.

If he accepts, the UFL could serve as the stage for him to regain competitive form and rekindle his football ambitions. His path back may take more than headlines-but now, at least, the microphone is pointed at a new possibility.

If Colin Kaepernick decides he’s ready to play again, there’s a league willing to hear him-and perhaps, help launch his return.

Let us know if you’d like analysis on how this might impact NFL outlooks or other comeback attempts.
