Colin Cowherd exposes LeBron James and the new Lakers owners in a power war that could shake the NBA

The biggest NBA news so far this offseason is a significant development for the Los Angeles Lakers: LeBron James has decided to exercise his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season. This information was confirmed by Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul in an interview with ESPN. James is now the first NBA player in history to play a 23rd season, which underscores his commitment to the game and the Lakers franchise. Paul emphasized that James “knows the Lakers are building for the future, but he also wants a realistic chance of winning it all,” highlighting the delicate balance the team must strike between immediate competitiveness and long-term strategy.

Colin Cowherd’s Critique of the Lakers’ Strategy

In a recent segment on “The Herd,” Colin Cowherd offered a scathing critique of the Lakers’ current direction. He argued that the new owners, who also control the Dodgers, are poised to overhaul the franchise’s approach, likening it to a complete restaurant renovation-from the kitchen staff to the menu. Cowherd also pointed out that the Lakers failed to involve James in free agency decisions and suggested that, at 41 years old, James should no longer be the focal point of the team’s strategy.

Cowherd also criticized the roster’s lack of size and the loss of Finney-Smith. He asserted that the Lakers are not championship contenders and that the new ownership, being antique experts, sees the current roster as a “knockoff” and knows what true success looks like.

The Lakers urgently need two centers, but key players like Clint Capela and Brook Lopez are already off the market. Cowherd also believes the team is focused on improving their scouting and hiring a new general manager who can lead the franchise to future success. This shift in strategy aligns with the broader narrative of building for the future, as James himself acknowledges.

However, balancing James’s desire for a realistic chance at a championship with the long-term vision of the new ownership remains a challenge. The decisions the Lakers make in the coming months will be crucial in determining whether they can reclaim their status as a premier NBA franchise.

The Context of LeBron’s Decision

LeBron’s decision comes at a critical juncture for the Lakers, who are in the midst of a transition period under new ownership. The team, which has won 17 championships and is second for the most in NBA history, has faced recent challenges, including a decisive loss in the first round of the playoffs.

I think James will play with Luka Doncic this season. Training and preparing together in the months before the new season starts will be essential for them both. Without a doubt, that duo can achieve incredible things as long as they have a good center, but with what Luka and LeBron earn, that task is complicated.
