With the offseason in full swing, the New York Yankees face a crucial outfield dilemma that could define their success in 2026. The free agency of Cody Bellinger, who was a key piece in their lineup last season, has sparked intense debate over how to replace his production.
The discussion initially focused on the possibility of replacing Bellinger with Kyle Tucker, who is projected to receive a monumental contract of approximately $360 million over 10 years, according to suggestions from analysts such as Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report. However, another possibility arose that opened up debate.
Analysts suggest Yankees pair Bellinger and Tucker
Despite the idea of choosing between one of the players, on the On The Shift program, analysts opened the debate about the option of putting both players together, and why choose between one when you can have both, or at least that’s what was raised on the podcast.
The first argument focused on Bellinger’s versatility. The player, who surprised with a production close to 30 home runs and 100 RBIs, offers valuable ability to play not only in the outfield, but also at first base, a natural position for him.
On the other hand, the possible departure of Trent Grisham (who contributed 34 home runs) and the anticipated 50-60 game absence of Giancarlo Stanton, make the arrival of a consistent hitter like Tucker an imperative need to cover the power deficit, so it is not so far-fetched to have both stars on the team.
Cody Bellinger is being followed by the Mets
The possibility of keeping Bellinger, however, is complicated by the threat from their crosstown rivals. Bellinger’s name has been heavily linked to the New York Mets, a rumor that has intensified since Jon Heyman first mentioned it in August.
Bellinger, represented by the influential Scott Boras, is on track to sign a massive contract, projected at around $180 million for six years or more, given his combination of plus defense at several positions and consistent contact without many strikeouts.
In this scenario, all signs point to a possible “salvation” for the Yankees. If the Mets decide to focus their attention on a similar, but potentially more economical profile, such as free agent Ryan O’Hearn, the Yankees would have a clear path to secure Bellinger and avoid a repeat of the costly mistake of losing important talent to their neighbors.
