Cody Bellinger is KO for a surprising reason

Cody Bellinger, the New York Yankees‘ star outfielder, is sidelined for a game against the Detroit Tigers on April 8, and the reason is as wild as it gets-food poisoning from some bad chicken wings. The former MVP, who’s been adjusting to life in pinstripes after a trade from the Chicago Cubs, had a rough night that’s got fans and teammates wincing in sympathy. This isn’t the start Bellinger hoped for in New York, but it’s a story that’s sparking plenty of chatter.

Manager Aaron Boone broke the news before the Tuesday matchup at Comerica Park, painting a vivid picture. “He’s been throwing up all night,” Boone said, pinning the blame on wings Bellinger ate the previous evening.

The good news? No other Yankees are feeling the effects, so it seems like a solo culinary misadventure. Bellinger was at the ballpark, and Boone hinted he might be available off the bench if his stomach settles. Still, it’s a tough break for a guy hitting .233 with one homer and six RBIs through eight games this season.

The timing isn’t ideal-Bellinger’s absence comes against Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal, a lefty who’s no picnic to face. Stepping up in center field is Trent Grisham, who’s been red-hot, batting .423 with three homers.

Fans on social media are already joking about the wings, with one X post quipping, “Buffalo Wild Wings claims another victim!” Others are wishing Bellinger a speedy recovery, knowing the Yankees need his bat to keep their 6-4 start rolling. This isn’t his first hiccup either-he missed two games last weekend in Pittsburgh due to back stiffness, so staying healthy is clearly a priority.

Bellinger’s no stranger to the spotlight. The 2019 NL MVP and 2020 World Series champ has been a key piece of the Yankees’ revamped lineup, alongside Aaron Judge and Paul Goldschmidt. His spring training was electric-.423 with four homers-so the potential’s there for a big year.

For now, though, it’s about getting past this stomach-churning setback. Boone’s optimistic, noting Bellinger managed a smile despite the ordeal. The team’s hoping he’s back swinging for Wednesday’s series finale, ready to put this wing-fueled nightmare behind him.

It’s a reminder that even superstars aren’t immune to life’s curveballs-or bad takeout. As the Yankees push forward, Bellinger’s absence is a quirky blip in a season full of promise. For now, Grisham’s got the outfield covered, and the Bronx Bombers are keeping their eyes on the prize.
