Cody Bellinger dazzles with masterful play and earns praise from teammates and rivals in Yankees victory

The New York Yankees experienced a much-needed respite on July 6, when they snapped a six-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory over the Mets. But beyond the scoreline, the big highlight was a spectacular defensive play by Cody Bellinger, which not only marked a turning point in the game, but has also resonated throughout the Big Apple and beyond.

In the seventh inning, when Juan Soto hit a powerful 89.9 mph drive that seemed destined to find the gap and change everything in the Mets’ favor, Bellinger responded with a grass-skimming catch that left those present speechless. But the magic didn’t stop there: the right fielder fired a missile to first base to double up Francisco Lindor, sealing a double play that stopped the threat in its tracks.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone could not hide his satisfaction and praised the quality of the play. “Considering everything that’s gone on this week, it’s probably the play of the year for us… And the quality of the throw to turn the double play, it was just a spectacular play by Belli,” he told Yes Network after the game.

Aaron Judge’s reaction

Aaron Judge was also impressed with what he saw on the field, saying: “That was incredible. I’ve never seen anything like that on the field. Especially a player like Soto, who has the ability to hit lines that go over the outfielders when they come in too far, it was a perfect play and just what we needed at that critical moment.”

But the night was even better for Bellinger, who not only shone defensively, but also contributed with the bat. The player got two hits, received a base on balls and accumulated three total bases, including a double in the fourth inning, contributing significantly to the team’s victory.

Even the rivals applauded

There are times when plays are so good that they not only receive applause from the fans and teammates of the protagonist’s team, but also from the opponents. In this respect, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised the effort: “A pretty incredible play… Probably the play of the game.”

For his part, Francisco Lindor also referred to the moment that everyone is talking about. “That play definitely hurt us.”

This is not the first time Bellinger has left his mark with his defense. In 2019, he was awarded the National League Gold Glove as the best defensive right fielder while playing for the Dodgers. His performance on Sunday was a reminder of his talent and ability to change the course of a game.
