Cody Bellinger could leave the Yankees after a great 2025 season

The New York Yankees failed to defend their American League title in the 2025 MLB playoffs, falling in four games to the Toronto Blue Jays in the Division Series. The elimination left a bitter taste in the Bronx, especially considering the apparent superiority of their starting rotation and powerful offense.

Despite having one of the most complete rosters in the league, the team failed to maintain consistency at key moments, something that is a concern for the future. Now, the management led by Brian Cashman must make important decisions to keep the team competitive in an increasingly demanding division.

The uncertain future of Cody Bellinger

One of the main topics of the offseason will be the future of Cody Bellinger, who, according to reports from Jorge Castillo of ESPN, plans to opt out of his contract to try his luck again in free agency. The 30-year-old outfielder had an outstanding season, hitting .272 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs, a .480 slugging percentage and an .813 OPS.

These numbers made him a key piece of the Yankees’ offense, consolidating his recovery after years marked by injuries. However, during the playoffs his production declined, hitting .214 in 28 at-bats against the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, although he did play part of the postseason with heel discomfort.

Between risk and reward

Bellinger’s talent is undeniable, but his medical history raises doubts within the organization. The player option he will turn down was worth $25 million, and his new contract could well exceed that figure, making his renewal an expensive gamble for a player with a complicated physical background.

However, his contribution as a left-handed hitter and his defensive ability in center field make him a difficult player to replace. His departure would leave an important void both in the lineup and in the locker room, where he has established himself as one of the team’s leaders.

A winter of decisions

The Yankees have the financial resources to keep Bellinger, but general manager Brian Cashman could opt for a more prudent strategy, saving salary space for future additions. One name that looms on the horizon is Jazz Chisholm Jr., who will be a free agent after next season.

Whatever the path, it’s clear the Yankees can’t afford another stumble. If Cody Bellinger doesn’t return to the Bronx in 2026, fans will demand a replacement who can match his impact on and off the field.
