The Roland Garros women’s final left everybody with a wild sensation; it faced the top 2 WTA ranked players in the planet, the american and world’s number 2, Coco Gauff, and the belarusian and world’s number 1, Aryna Sabalenka. A match that was destined to happen in Paris, a match that everybody was expecting, just as the men’s final was decided, by today’s top players in the category. Gauff came out on top after winning the match 2 sets to 1, but the real story came afterwards.

In the post-match press conference, Sabalenka gave quite the comments for the media to lick their whiskers. “I think she won the match not because she played incredible…just because I made all of those mistakes“, voiced the world’s number one. She later even claimed that if Iga Swiatek had beaten her in the semifinals, the polish would have gotten the better of the american. The winner of the french major had the opportunity to talk about the matter.

Coco Gauff surprised by Aryna Sabalenka

Ahead of Wimbledon, the world’s number two had the chance to give a sense of her conditions towards ‘The Championships’ and to give a take to what Sabalenka had to say. “Obviously some of the things that were said in the presser, I was a bit more surprised about,” claimed Gauff, “but I’m not someone to hold a grudge. I said to my team, ‘if she apologizes I will be fine and we’ll move on.”

Both tennis players posted a TikTok video of them dancing at Centre Court a couple of days ago, hinting that the american got just what she asked for. “She did (apologize privately), she did again when I saw her before practice”, explained the two-time major champion, “Aryna and I, I feel that we got along pretty well befor that. It wasn’t really hard to accept that apology. I understand that things weren’t translated as how she meant it to be.”

Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka look to face each other again

Both women are on great form towards Wimbledon, but Gauff hasn’t had the success she would desire in the grass courts. “My next goal is obviously to have a good result here. I’ve lost in the fourth rounds a few times so I would love to get past that stage.” Certainly, Gauff has 3 eliminations in the fourth round at Wimbledon, the farthest she has reached in the tournament.

“I would love to win this, but I’m a big believer in just conquering one step at a time“, added the american, “If I get past that stage, I will start thinking about the winning.” A rematch between them would mean that they would face wach other in the final. Everybody is yearning this to happen, not just the laureated athletes. “

Gauff’s road towards the title

  • R3 – S. Kenin (28)
  • R4 – D. Kasatkina (16)
