An American was going to take over from Aryna Sabalenka at the WTA 1000 in Wuhan. Coco Gauff defeated Jessica Pegula 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday and proved to be the number one player in her country. Pegula, who had ended Sabalenka’s 20-match winning streak in the Chinese tournament, did not perform at the same level in the final. Coco Gauff is once again the best alternative to the dominance of Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek. The three of them occupy the world podium and will meet again at the WTA Finals in Cancun (October 29 to November 5).No one had dropped fewer games (25) on the way to winning the crown in Wuhan. She now has 11 trophies in her cabinet, three of them in the WTA 1000 category
Gauff has won all nine finals she has played on hard courts throughout her career. She is the first player to achieve this sequence since Serena Williams (12 between the 2013 US Open and 2015 Cincinnati)
