Clay Travis boldly challenges Angel Reese to $100K basketball game, but there’s a controversial catch

Chicago Sky star Angel Reese has received a wild request to face OutKick founder and outspoken sports commentator Clay Travis in a one-on-one basketball match.

Travis has once again thrust himself into the center of a gender debate in athletics – this time by challenging the WNBA pro to a high-stakes, one-on-one basketball match with $100,000 on the line.

Travis posted on social media, offering Reese $100,000 if she can beat him in a head-to-head game. The catch? If he wins, Reese must publicly acknowledge a controversial claim.

“I’ll put up $100k. You win, I’ll donate $100k to the WNBA or any charity you want. I win, you have to post a video saying men are better at sports than women,” Travis declared in his post.

Despite his limited athletic background compared to Reese, a professional basketball player and NCAA champion, Travis expressed confidence in his chances.

He even joked that his eighth-grade son’s basketball team would handle his training in preparation for the matchup. The provocative offer was spurred by Reese’s recent performance in a WNBA game, where she struggled with her shooting efficiency.

Not the first challenge laid down by Travis

This isn’t the first time Travis has put forward a bold, gendered sports challenge. Earlier this year, he offered a staggering $1 million to the Las Vegas Aces, current WNBA champions, to compete in a game against a boys’ high school basketball team. His claim? That the boys would emerge victorious.

When Aces guard Chelsea Gray caught wind of the proposal, she responded bluntly, calling Travis a “dumbass” on social media. Travis, doubling down, said, “A good, state championship caliber, high school boys team would smoke the best team in the WNBA.”

Despite the publicity, the Aces never formally acknowledged the challenge, and the proposed showdown never happened. With his latest offer to Angel Reese, Travis seems determined to stir the pot once again, pitting gender against athleticism in a public spectacle.

While some see his challenge as a publicity stunt aimed at stirring controversy, others interpret it as a genuine (if flawed) attempt to confront what he perceives as inconsistencies in sports narratives.

To date, Angel Reese has not responded publicly to Travis’s proposition. It remains to be seen whether she will take up the challenge or dismiss it altogether.

What’s certain is that the ongoing back-and-forth has reignited conversations around gender equity in sports, the physical differences between male and female athletes, and the way women in sports are treated in public discourse.

Regardless of the outcome, Clay Travis has once again succeeded in putting himself – and his opinions – squarely at the center of sports media attention.
