Clark Hunt chases the Cowboys after Andy Reid achieved his goal with a simple phrase

Andy Reid stands tall among the NFL’s most successful head coaches. Not only is the Kansas City Chiefs helmsman now etched alongside the legends of the game, but the team has also enshrined one of his most iconic phrases-soon to fly proudly on their Red Friday flag.

In 2019, Reid cemented his place in NFL history by winning Super Bowl LIV, the first of three championships on his record. Amid the celebration, “Big Red” paid homage to another coaching icon-Jimmy Johnson.

Back in the locker room after the 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers, Reid shouted, “How ’bout those Chiefs?”-a nod to Johnson’s famed “How ’bout them Cowboys?” declaration after the 1993 NFC Championship.

Chiefs honor Reid’s legacy

Reid’s quote could have simply remained a heartfelt Super Bowl footnote. But Chiefs owner Clark Hunt made sure it would be remembered. The team announced that Reid’s four words will now be featured on their traditional Red Friday banner.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Chiefs shared video footage of the 2019 locker room celebration, with Reid declaring the now-famous phrase-and Hunt sitting right behind him. The caption read: “About time we immortalized Coach’s phrase. Introducing our new Red Friday flag.”

At the end of the clip, Reid proudly holds the new flag emblazoned with “How ’bout those Chiefs” and the team’s emblem. A simple, emotional tribute that now becomes part of one of KC’s most cherished traditions.

Chiefs chase Cowboys in NFL popularity

The flag reveal might seem like a flashy marketing moment-but it comes at a significant time for the franchise. A recent YouGov.com survey ranked the Kansas City Chiefs as the fourth most recognized team in the NFL, with 86% fan awareness.

Historically, the Dallas Cowboys dominate this metric. But the Chiefs are gaining ground, and it’s clear that Hunt’s decisions-including this symbolic tribute-aim to narrow the gap. A flag may seem trivial, but for fans, it speaks volumes.
