Clark Hunt and Mahomes’ Chiefs pay tribute to Krystal Anderson, the cheerleader they still mourn

What began as an ordinary offseason for the Kansas City Chiefs in March 2024 was shaken by tragedy with the sudden passing of former cheerleader Krystal Anderson.

At just 40 years old, Krystal died on March 20 following complications from the stillbirth of her daughter, Charlotte Willow. Her loss sent waves of sorrow through the Chiefs organization, the local Kansas City community, and beyond.

Krystal was far more than a familiar face on the sidelines. A resident of Leawood, she lit up every room she entered-not just through her performances as a cheerleader for ten seasons, but through her kindness, intelligence, and drive to make a difference.

Off the field, Krystal was a software engineer, yoga instructor, and an active voice in promoting Black women in STEM. She even held a patent for developing software aimed at predicting postpartum hemorrhage, showing her passion for women’s health.

Following the birth and sudden stillbirth of her daughter, Krystal developed sepsis-a life-threatening condition where the body’s response to infection turns on itself.

Despite a fierce battle, including multiple surgeries, Krystal passed away due to cardiac arrest caused by the infection. Her husband, Clayton Anderson, was left to grieve a future that vanished in an instant, caring for their young son, James, and shouldering a sorrow too heavy for words.

A tribute that lives on

In response to this profound loss, the Hunt Family Foundation made a heartfelt decision to ensure Krystal’s legacy would continue to inspire. On May 1, 2025, the Foundation introduced the inaugural Krystal Anderson Unbreakable Joy Award. This annual honor recognizes individuals or organizations whose mission reflects Krystal’s unwavering values: joy, resilience, and compassion.

The first recipient, Jordan, representing KC STEM Alliance, was selected for their work in science and technology education-an area where Krystal had served as an advisory board member. The award was presented with a custom Chiefs football, symbolizing both recognition and remembrance.

During the 2024 NFL season, the Chiefs paid special tribute to Krystal with subtle but meaningful gestures. Cheerleaders wore custom wrist cuffs adorned with her initials, and her name was honored on the sideline padding in the very spot she once stood with pride-“Krystal’s corner.”

Her husband Clayton, who launched a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses and memorial costs, also began advocating for changes in prenatal care. He’s been vocal about the shortcomings in the healthcare system, especially for women of color, and plans to continue Krystal’s mission through a foundation dedicated to women’s health, STEM opportunities, and mental wellness.

Krystal’s story is one of brilliance, both lived and lost too soon. Yet through the annual award and the ongoing efforts of those she touched, her energy continues to radiate. The Chiefs community, the STEM world, and countless others will carry forward the joy she so freely gave.
