The Cincinnati Bengals suffered a major setback early in the season when star quarterback Joe Burrow went down with an injury during Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. His absence left a massive void in the team’s offense, forcing the franchise to urgently search for a capable replacement. That search eventually led to the signing of veteran quarterback Joe Flacco ahead of Week 6.

Cincinnati capitalized on the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback uncertainty, acquiring Flacco in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. The 39-year-old brings experience and stability, qualities the Bengals desperately need to stay competitive in the AFC North.

Reports have since revealed that the Bengals evaluated as many as 13 potential quarterbacks before finalizing their decision. The extensive search underscores how critical replacing Burrow was to the team’s ambitions, and how much pressure now rests on Flacco to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The quarterbacks the Bengals considered before turning to Joe Flacco

Following Joe Burrow’s injury, the Cincinnati Bengals were determined to find an experienced and reliable quarterback to keep their playoff hopes alive. Head coach Zac Taylor and the Bengals’ front office compiled a list of 13 potential replacements, focusing on players with proven leadership, NFL experience, and the ability to quickly adapt to Cincinnati’s offensive system.

Among the top names considered was Russell Wilson of the New York Giants, who has been sidelined amid the strong performances of rookie Jaxson Dart. A Super Bowl champion with a long and decorated career, Wilson’s experience and leadership made him an attractive option for the Bengals as they looked for stability under center.

In a surprising move, reports also indicated that Cincinnati explored the possibility of bringing back retired quarterback Derek Carr, who stepped away from football after a serious shoulder injury. Additionally, Tommy DeVito of the New England Patriots, currently serving as the team’s third-string quarterback, was also among those evaluated due to his previous experience with the Giants.

Other names reportedly on the Bengals’ radar included Kirk Cousins (Falcons), Anthony Richardson (Colts), Jimmy Garoppolo (Rams), Jameis Winston (Giants), Drew Lock (Seahawks), Stetson Bennett (Rams), Davis Mills (Texans), Tanner McKee (Eagles), and Josh Johnson (Commanders). After weighing all options, the Bengals ultimately settled on veteran Joe Flacco, valuing his poise, experience, and ability to take charge of the offense immediately.

What we know about Joe Burrow’s injury and his path to recovery

The Cincinnati Bengals received encouraging news regarding Joe Burrow’s injury after the quarterback was forced to leave the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Initial fears of a long-term absence have eased, as recent updates suggest steady progress in his recovery.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Burrow is “on track to return in mid-December,” offering hope for the Bengals’ playoff push. The team remains cautious but optimistic that their franchise quarterback could make his comeback before the end of the regular season.
