Cincinnati Bengals are holding out for a mammoth trade package for Trey Hendrickson

The Cincinnati Bengals are reportedly considering trading star defensive end Trey Hendrickson amid an unresolved contract dispute. Hendrickson, 30, has been one of the league’s most productive pass rushers, yet negotiations for a multiyear extension have not advanced, leaving his future in Cincinnati uncertain.

Reports first emerged in June that Hendrickson had made no progress on a contract extension and was unlikely to attend training camp. Despite this, Hendrickson appeared at the Bengals’ camp late last month.

While he did not participate in drills, he observed practices closely and provided guidance to younger players, including rookie defensive lineman Shemar Stewart. Hendrickson emphasized his commitment to supporting the team despite the ongoing contract situation.

The Bengals have reportedly begun listening to trade proposals for Hendrickson. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, teams that inquired were informed the asking price includes a young defensive player plus a 2026 first-round draft pick.

Sources clarified that the player sent to Cincinnati in a potential trade would not necessarily need to be a pass rusher, indicating the team is seeking both immediate talent and future draft value.

Bengals haven’t been able to agree a new deal with Hendrickson

Hendrickson’s contributions extend beyond his on-field performance. He has been a veteran leader, helping younger players adjust to the NFL while maintaining a professional and disciplined environment. His presence has been particularly significant for guiding rookies and ensuring cohesion among defensive teammates.

Financial considerations also factor into the ongoing dispute. Hendrickson is scheduled to earn a base salary of $15.8 million for the 2025 season if no new contract is agreed upon. The Bengals reportedly offered a multiyear deal in the $35 million per year range, which Hendrickson has yet to accept. His recent performance underscores his value: he led the NFL with 17.5 sacks last season and has totaled 35 sacks over the last two years.

The Bengals previously explored trade options, reportedly offering a package that included a second-round pick, but negotiations did not advance. According to NFL reporter Tom Pelissero, Cincinnati is seeking a first-round selection in any potential trade, reflecting Hendrickson’s high value to the team.

As the Bengals move forward, they face several options: finalizing a new contract with Hendrickson, trading him for draft picks and a young player, or allowing him to play under his current contract. Each path carries strategic implications for the team’s defensive lineup and salary cap management.

Hendrickson’s combination of elite pass-rushing ability and leadership makes him a valuable asset in the NFL. The resolution of this contract dispute will be closely watched, not only by Bengals fans but also by other teams evaluating potential trades and roster strategies.

With the 2025 season approaching, the Bengals must determine how best to balance immediate defensive needs with long-term planning, all while navigating the complexities of one of their most impactful players’ contracts.
