AC Milan’s Christian Pulisic will not be called up by the United States national team coach Mauricio Pochettino to participate in the upcoming edition of the Gold Cup, which will be held in the United States during the month of June
According to ESPN and FoxSports, Pulisic requires rest after the gruelling European season he is having with the Rossoneri, although no specific injury was revealed
In fact, Pulisic will be available for Milan at the weekend in their final game of the season against Monza. This will be his 50th game in all competitions, even though the club has nothing left to play for and is out of the running for European tournaments next season
Why Pulisic asked for a break in the summer
ESPN reports that Pulisic has had a chronic hip problem since March, although it could not confirm whether this same problem is the cause of the striker’s request.
However, the decision comes at a bad time for the USMNT, who had a disastrous performance in the Concacaf Nations League last March, where they lost to Panama and Canada, allowing Mexico to win the tournament for the first time in history
In addition to Pulisic, the Stars and Stripes will also be without their Juventus duo of Weston McKennie and Tim Weah, as well as Gio Reyna of Borussia Dortmund, as all will be participating with their teams in the upcoming Club World Cup, which will be held at the same time
While Johnny Cardoso could also miss the tournament, as he is in the middle of negotiations to finalize his transfer to Atletico Madrid.
The USMNT will begin its participation in the Gold Cup on June 15 against Trinidad and Tobago, then face the tournament’s guest team, Saudi Arabia, on June 19 and close against Haiti three days later.
The United States last won the Gold Cup in 2021, the last time they reached the final of the Concacaf national team tournament.
