Chris Russo criticizes Yankees for not hiring Terry Francona over Aaron Boone

During his show, veteran sports commentator Chris Russo expressed his frustration with the direction the New York Yankees have taken in recent years.

In particular, he pointed directly to the fact that the team did not seriously consider Terry Francona as manager, instead opting to keep Aaron Boone in the job.

Russo called the decision “an historic mistake” and questioned Boone’s ability to lead a franchise with as much pressure and expectations as the Yankees.

Francona’s legacy and what might have been

Terry Francona is widely recognized for his success with the Boston Red Sox, including the historic 2004 World Series that broke the 86-year curse. He also led the Cleveland Guardians to multiple postseason appearances, demonstrating his ability to build competitive teams and maintain clubhouse discipline.

Russo argued that “Francona is the kind of leader the Yankees need“, someone with experience, character and respect within the baseball world. In contrast, he criticized Boone for being “too soft” and for not having full control over the team’s decisions.

Boone under pressure

Since his arrival in 2018, Aaron Boone has led the Yankees to several playoff appearances, but without achieving the main goal of winning the World Series. Strategic decisions, bullpen management and lack of consistency have been recurring points of criticism from the media and fans.

Russo noted that “Boone seems more like a spokesman than a real strategist,” hinting that the important decisions are made from the front office and not from the dugout.

The fans’ reaction

Russo’s words resonated with Yankees fans, many of whom have expressed discontent with the current management. On social media, several users agreed that “Francona would have been a better choice” and that the team needs a change of leadership to regain its winning identity.

Others defended Boone, arguing that he has kept the team competitive despite injuries and roster changes.

A change on the horizon?

Although there is no official indication that the Yankees are considering replacing Boone, media pressure and the team’s performance could influence future decisions. Russo suggested that “if the Yankees fail this season, there is no excuse not to look for someone like Francona.”

The possibility of Francona returning to the dugout, even with another team, remains appealing to many, especially because of his reputation as one of the best managers of the modern era.

Error or strategic decision?

Chris Russo‘s criticism highlights the debate over leadership at the Yankees. While Boone remains in charge, comparisons to figures such as Terry Francona continue.

If the Yankees want to get back to the top, it may be time to rethink who should lead them from the dugout.
