Chris Jones says goodbye to the Kansas City Chiefs; is Patrick Mahomes heading down the same path?

There is no doubt that the Kansas City Chiefs are one of the biggest disappointments of the season. They went from being one step away from winning their third consecutive Super Bowl to missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014. In reality, the season was already expected to be difficult, especially considering how the previous one ended.

Last season, the Chiefs were simply dominated by the Philadelphia Eagles in a 40-22 loss, with no offensive response; Kansas City’s points came in garbage time. In fact, in 2024 the Chiefs benefited from a lot of good fortune in their 15-2 record, as they won 10 games by seven points or fewer-something that did not repeat itself in 2025.

Additionally, last year in the AFC West, despite the Chiefs winning the division for a ninth straight season, both the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Chargers also made the playoffs. Those teams were clearly trending upward, and that has proven true: the Chiefs collapsed, while the Broncos and Chargers remain in the fight for the division.

Chris Jones sends a message to the Chiefs regarding the future stadium move

Despite missing the playoffs, the Kansas City Chiefs made headlines this week after announcing they will leave their historic Arrowhead Stadium (where they have played since 1972) and move to a new domed stadium in the state of Kansas for the 2031 season. For now, they will continue playing at their current venue.

Several players were asked about the move, including defensive leader Chris Jones. His response was blunt: “I won’t be here by then.” There is no doubt he is right; it is almost impossible that he will still be playing with the Chiefs-or even in the NFL-by that time. Jones is currently 31 years old and under contract through the 2028 season.

Among the players currently on the roster, it is very difficult for any of them to still be around by then. The only one with a real chance, and the player the Chiefs are surely hoping will inaugurate the new stadium, is their superstar Patrick Mahomes. By that time, Mahomes will be 35 years old, and if he stays healthy, there is no doubt he could be there.

During the current season, Patrick Mahomes suffered a serious knee injury (a ligament tear) during a game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14, 2025. He is expected to be ready for the start of next season, although there is still a long road ahead in his recovery.
