Chris Jones does not believe Travis Kelce will retire, even though Taylor Swift thinks otherwise

The Kansas City Chiefs closed the curtain on a deeply disappointing 2025 campaign with a narrow 14-12 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, a game that may ultimately be remembered less for the scoreline and more for what it represented for Travis Kelce.

At 36 years old and coming off one of the most turbulent seasons of his storied career, the star tight end once again finds himself at a crossroads, unsure whether he will return for another year or step away from the game entirely.

Kelce did little to quiet the speculation after the Week 18 defeat. Speaking postgame, he admitted he has not yet determined whether a retirement decision will come quickly or require extended reflection.

That uncertainty has fueled debate across the league, especially given that this is now the second consecutive offseason in which Kelce has faced the same question.

Last year, the answer came swiftly. This time, the tone feels more ambiguous. Despite the swirling doubts, one voice inside the Chiefs locker room sounded unwaveringly confident.

Defensive tackle Chris Jones, Kelce’s longtime teammate and close friend, dismissed the idea that the tight end is finished.

“I’m not buying it, he’ll be back next year,” Jones told reporters following the loss in Las Vegas.

When pressed further and asked for a guarantee, Jones stopped short of making promises but doubled down on his belief. “I can’t promise you anything about another man. This was a tricky year for us, I have faith in my dawg coming back,” he said.

A bond forged through championships and longevity

The confidence from Jones is rooted in nearly a decade of shared battles.

The two have been teammates since the Chiefs selected Jones in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, a partnership that has helped define one of the most successful eras in franchise history.

Together, Kelce and Jones have been central figures in three Super Bowl championships, anchoring an offense-defense core that made Kansas City a perennial contender.

That history makes this moment particularly difficult. The 2025 season unraveled on multiple fronts, and the finale against the Raiders felt anticlimactic.

Kelce finished the game with just three receptions for 12 yards, a modest stat line that contrasted sharply with his past postseason heroics. Still, even on a quiet afternoon, history followed him.

Kelce became the 23rd pass-catcher and just the third tight end in NFL history to surpass 13,000 career receiving yards.

He also secured the two catches he needed to move past Terrell Owens for eighth place on the league’s all-time receptions list. Owens retired with 1,078 catches, while Kelce entered the game with 1,077, making the milestone inevitable.

Will Kelce retire on a low?

Yet the accomplishments were largely overshadowed by questions about what comes next. If Kelce chooses to return, the path forward could look very different.

The expectation is that Patrick Mahomes, recovering from a torn ACL, would be back under center, giving the Chiefs a chance to reset and pursue another postseason run.

Ending Kelce‘s career on a note defined by injuries and missed opportunities would feel out of character for a player who has long thrived on the biggest stages.

If he walks away, Kelce will do so as one of the greatest tight ends the game has ever seen, his résumé already secure. Still, the conversation surrounding his future has extended beyond football.

His high-profile relationship with Taylor Swift has added another layer of intrigue, with many interpreting her recent public comments and demeanor as signals that she may be preparing for a life beyond the NFL grind.

For now, belief inside the locker room and speculation outside of it continue to collide. Whether Jones‘ confidence proves prophetic or this truly marks the end, the legacy of Kelce is unquestioned. The only remaining mystery is whether his story has one more chapter left to be written.
