The loss in Super Bowl LIX left several lessons for the Kansas City Chiefs. The first ones is that their offensive line is a sieve, and the second is that neither Travis Kelce nor Patrick Mahomes can win games on their own. That is why the management will go out to snatch one of the best receivers in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The way the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense dominated the Chiefs’ offensive line surprised more than one analyst. That is why most consider this to be the priority for head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.
Players like offensive tackles Armand Membou (Missouri) and Donovan Jackson (OSU) are strong candidates for Kansas City in the first round. Others predict that Reid will prioritize defense with tackles Walter Nolen (Ole Miss) or Derrick Harmon (Oregon).
With so much focus on what will happen in the first round, little is said about what the Chiefs could do with their later picks, and that is where Mahomes could receive the help he needs.
Strengthening the Chiefs’ receiver room
With this in mind, analysts from Pro Football Network predict that Reid will not want to take any more risks and will choose one of the most attractive receivers in the 2025 class, Savion Williams, star of the TCU Horned Frogs.
Although Williams was unable to shine during the season with Texas Christian University, his characteristics make him one of the best prospects this year in terms of receivers. At 6-5 with a 4.45-second 40-yard dash, Williams would be a perfect match for second-year WR Xavier Worthy in long-yardage situations.
At first glance, the Chiefs’ receiving corps looks pretty robust with players of the caliber of DeAndre Hopkins, Marquise Brown, Rashee Rice, and Worthy; not to mention star tight end Travis Kelce. However, free agency will decimate that arsenal considerably.
The Chiefs’ salary cap
Hopkins and Brown have one foot out of the organization. Both came in on one-year deals, and unless the front office works miracles with its salary cap, it will be difficult to keep both. Even keeping one would be a feat for the accounting department.
Stars like Tee Higgins, Chris Godwin, and Stefon Diggs-already available in free agency-are out of the Chiefs’ reach for the same reason. Thus, the best option for the board is to go into the 2025 Draft with their checkbook ready, looking to fill the gaps that are so urgently needed.
