Chiefs rookie standout at minicamp seems like the weapon Patrick Mahomes has been waiting for

The Kansas City Chiefs may have uncovered a hidden gem in undrafted rookie wide receiver Jalen Royals. After going unselected in the 2024 NFL Draft, the former Utah State standout has been making waves during the team’s rookie minicamp, impressing coaches and teammates with his speed, footwork, and big-play ability.

Royals, who led the Mountain West Conference with 1,077 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns last season, has translated his college production into early professional promise.

He’s stood out during red zone drills and one-on-one matchups, showcasing precise route-running and an ability to gain separation – traits that have caught the attention of head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.

A surprise connection in the making

Royals has drawn praise as one of the biggest surprises of minicamp. His chemistry with quarterback Patrick Mahomes is reportedly developing quickly, with the two connecting on several deep throws in 7-on-7 drills.

Mahomes, never shy to praise young talent, acknowledged Royals’ strong start, saying, “He’s got a great feel for space and timing – very smart player.”

Royals’ performance is even more notable considering Kansas City’s need for wide receiver help following the departure of veterans and the inconsistent play from last season’s group. His emergence adds a potential new weapon to a team already loaded with championship pedigree.

While it’s still early, Royals is making a strong case to not only make the 53-man roster but to earn meaningful snaps in the Chiefs’ offense. For a team led by one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the NFL, the addition of a reliable, explosive weapon like Royals could be exactly what keeps Kansas City atop the AFC yet again.

If minicamp is any indication, Jalen Royals is ready to prove that stars don’t always have to be drafted.
