Chiefs have serious offensive line issues but a different position might need more attention this offseason

Everyone saw what happened on February 9, but it’s still hard for football fans to really digest what transpired. The Kansas City Chiefs were exposed thoroughly in Super Bowl LIX, with their major weaknesses amplified by a supremely talented Philadelphia Eagles team.

In the aftermath, the Chiefs’ future has major question marks. First and foremost, the team doesn’t know if Travis Kelce will retire or be back for at least one more season as the starting tight end. The team now knows the units on the squad that need the most work during the offseason. The offensive line in particular was one of the main reasons for the Chiefs’ putrid performance in the Super Bowl.

Chiefs could have whole new wide receiver corps in 2025

But the wide receiver room hasn’t been spared from a fair share of criticism. In fact, there’s more concern about the pass-catching corps than the offensive line due to a ton of uncertainty about who will be catching passes from Patrick Mahomes in 2025. Sterling Xie of Pro Football Network outlined this in a recent article.

[Rashee] Rice will be back as a centerpiece, but the rest of the wide receiver room looks very uncertain. [Marquise] Brown, DeAndre Hopkins, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Justin Watson are all free agents… Rebuilding that receiver room will play a factor in whether the Chiefs can recover from another long season to run the gauntlet again in 2025

None of the impending free agents had a major role in 2024, with Hopkins coming in midseason and Brown being injured for almost the entire year. Rice should be ready at some point in 2025, but his knee injury was severe and his rehab timeline is still unknown.

Especially if Kelce retires, Mahomes could be looking at a whole slate of new pass-catchers in 2025 aside from Xavier Worthy. Given how much of a struggle it was to find that chemistry with new players in 2024, it’s a genuine concern for the Kansas City offense going forward.
