Chiefs get major Rashee Rice update as legal case hits a benchmark under Patrick Mahomes’ watchful eye

Heading into the offseason, there were two position groups that stood out in terms of having to be better for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2025 NFL season. The offensive line was the group that was most exposed in their Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. But the wide receiver corps wasn’t too far behind.

While it’s true that Patrick Mahomes had very little time to go through his reads agains a fierce Eagles pass-rush, his receivers also didn’t get any separation. The team had dealt with a lot of injuries at the position through the regular season, but none was more detrimental than Rashee Rice being lost for the season. He was on his way to superstardom despite a legal case lingering over his head, and a knee injury cut his ascent short.

Heading into 2025, Rice’s health doesn’t appear to be a major question mark, but his case remains one. The NFL has avoided handing down any type of suspension for Rice until his legal matter is resolved, stemming from a hit-and-run crash in Dallas during the 2024 offseason.

Rashee Rice civil case trial date set for January 20, 2026

On Thursday, new information emerged regarding a civil case waged against him for his fault in the crash. A trial date has been set for January 20, 2026. The case involves two victims who are suing for millions of dollars in damages.

While that should be good news for the Chiefs, the most important case for Rice is the criminal one. The NFL likely won’t make any type of decision until the criminal case is done. But given that one of the civil cases won’t be resolved until January, it should mean that Rice could go the entire season without a suspension, once again.
