Heading into free agency, the Kansas City Chiefs had plenty of things to take care of. While convincing Travis Kelce to come back for another season was the top priority, so was bringing some explosiveness to the offense. They certainly did that by signing Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker to lead the backfield.
In order to be able to bring in Walker and other pieces, the front office had work to do to clear salary cap space. As a result of that process, the Chiefs secondary was practically gutted. Almost the entire defensive backfield from last season is gone, with the biggest loss being cornerback Trent McDuffie. The consolation prize from the McDuffie trade was an additional first round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Mansoor Delane becoming a common pairing for Chiefs in mock drafts
In early mock drafts, Notre Dame running back Jeremiah Love was a common link for Kansas City. But after free agency, with Walker signed and the secondary needing help, cornerback has emerged as the most common pairing for the Chiefs in mock drafts. Naturally, that has placed LSU’s Mansoor Delane squarely on the Chiefs’ radar.
Delane is considered the top cornerback prospect in the draft by just about everyone. There’s talent at the position behind him, but most of the prospects have question marks. Delane is the most pro-ready and very much looks like a Day 1 starter. That’s exactly what the Chiefs need.
It wasn’t just McDuffie that the Chiefs lost this offseason. Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams also departed, as did starting safety Bryan Cook. The team signed Alohi Gilman to replace Cook, but cornerback is quite clearly the team’s biggest weakness right now. Adding Delane seems like the most logical outcome come draft night.
