The drama began after Jackson County voters rejected a sales tax extension in April 2024 that would have helped fund upgrades to both Arrowhead and the Royals’ new stadium project.
The setback left Clark Hunt and the Chiefs looking for alternative funding – quickly drawing interest from Kansas lawmakers, who countered with an ambitious $3 billion stadium plan to bring the Chiefs across the border.
The Kansas proposal, which includes a domed stadium and long-term tax incentives, expires at the end of June. Meanwhile, Missouri has responded with Senate Bill 3, which offers to cover 50% of a $1.15 billion renovation to Arrowhead, aimed at keeping the franchise rooted in the state for the next 30 years.
