Chicago Sky’s struggles: Angel Reese’s WNBA performance raises red flags

Expectations were sky-high for Angel Reese, the seventh overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. Since arriving in the league, Reese has tried to position herself as a major figure, even comparing her stardom to that of WNBA sensation Caitlin Clark. But so far, her production on the court hasn’t matched the talk.

In their early-season matchup, Clark posted an eye-catching triple-double, cementing her MVP candidacy. Reese, on the other hand, had a much quieter showing. As a rookie, she averaged a solid double-double with 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game-but her 39% field goal percentage already raised concerns about her offensive efficiency.

A worrying decline in Reese’s offensive game

Rather than improving in her sophomore year, Reese has regressed. While her rebounding remains elite-she’s pulling down 12.6 boards per game, including 5.6 on the offensive glass-her scoring has dipped to just 9.3 points per game. Even more concerning is her shooting percentage: only 30.9% from the field, including a dismal 30.8% on two-point attempts.

That two-point percentage is 10 points lower than last season. Reese is taking fewer shots, playing fewer minutes, and often ends up rebounding her own missed attempts. Despite her hustle, her lack of offensive efficiency is holding the team back.

Reese isn’t the only issue: Other pieces are underperforming in Chicago

While Reese garners much of the media spotlight, she’s far from the Sky’s only problem. The team made aggressive offseason moves, acquiring WNBA All-Stars Courtney Vandersloot and Ariel Atkins in hopes of pushing for the playoffs. So far, that vision has fallen flat.

Kamilla Cardoso, the No. 3 pick in the same draft as Reese, has shown more consistency but hasn’t made the leap either. Her scoring average has increased slightly from 9.8 to 10.9 points, but her shooting efficiency dropped from 52.1% to 50.8%. Her minutes, blocks (1.4 to 0.7), and rebounds (7.9 to 6.1) have all gone down as well.

Can the Chicago Sky turn things around in the 2025 WNBA season?

LAPRESSE

With a young core and veteran reinforcements, the Chicago Sky were expected to be playoff contenders. Instead, they find themselves battling inconsistency and underperformance. Angel Reese remains a high-profile figure in the league, but she’ll need to adjust quickly if she wants to fulfill her WNBA star potential.

For now, the Sky face a critical stretch in a season that’s falling well short of expectations.
