Eliminated from playoff contention for the second straight year with a 10-34 record, the Chicago Sky bitterly closed out this WNBA season.
Angel Reese, Courtney Vandersloot and Ariel Atkins were scheduled to speak, but the team confirmed that they will not participate in these exit interviews as scheduled.
Sky’s absence is not the only one
The truth is that Chicago’s most recognized trio was going to answer questions about their season and the team’s performance. However, as these interviews are voluntary and they are under no obligation to do them and are not at risk of sanctions by the WNBA, they opted not to do them.
However, they are not the only team that will not give these exit interviews; New York Liberty opted out, as did Sky, as reported by Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports.
However, despite leaving fans without the word and opinion of Chicago’s three stars, they also won’t be able to shed any more light on Reese’s future with the team.
Following her remarks in a Sept. 3 interview with the Chicago Tribune, Angel was sanctioned by the team when she warned, “We have to get great players. That’s a non-negotiable for me,” she said. In addition, she warned that if the situation did not change, she “might have to move in a different direction and do what’s best for me.”
Although she apologized for her words to her teammates, the team suspended her and she missed the first half of the Sept. 7 game against the Las Vegas Aces. Although the injury to her back did not allow her to play the second half, missing the other four final games, relations between the 23-year-old forward and the team have been strained.
That is why, this last decision of not showing up to the exit interviews increases the rumors and gives to think about her possible departure from the team.
Meanwhile, General manager Jeff Pagliocca told reporters on Sept. 12 that he has had “good conversations with Angel daily” and that “Until I hear differently, she’s on the roster.”
Reese last took the court with Sky on Sept. 3 against Connecticut Sun, finishing her season with 14.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
Now, although she will play the second season of the Unrivaled League in January, Angel will have to wait until May for his third year in the league, when the regular season begins, although it is still uncertain if he will continue in the Sky.
