When it doesn’t rain, it pours for the Chicago Sky. Amid a disastrous start to the season, which has them at 2-5, Courtney Vandersloot’s injury dealt the team a severe blow, and now the most viable replacement for their star player has revealed the friction that forced her out of the team at the end of last season.
The start of the season has been a nightmare for the Sky. In addition to their terrible record, which places them in fifth place in the Eastern Conference and 11th overall, the team suffered another setback on Saturday afternoon, losing 79-52 to a depleted Indiana Fever, who didn’t even have their star, Caitlin Clark, on the court.
As if that weren’t enough, the front office, at the end of the game, announced that Vandersloot would be out for the rest of the season with a torn right ACL. Shortly after the news became public, Chennedy Carter posted a message on social media that will surely force the Sky to reevaluate their next steps.
Will Chennedy return to Chicago?
After an excellent performance in her only season with the Sky in 2024, the team released Carter without further explanation. She then played the 2024-2025 season with the Chinese Wuhan Shengfan and currently plays for the Adelitas de Chihuahua in Mexico.
Given her background, Carter was one of the first options to replace Vandersloot with the Sky; however, her recent message casts doubt on the player’s willingness to sign with her former squad. “When the universe gives you signs you pay attention,” Chennedy began her message on Threads.
“What goes around always comes back around,” Carter continued without clarifying the recipient of her message. “When you have ugly in your heart, the outcome will always backfire. Just wanna say, pay attention to the universe. It’s speaking to us.”
What are the Sky’s options?
Although Carter isn’t completely ruled out, her potential friction with the team makes her signing difficult. Chicago’s most viable option is to give rookie Hailey Van Lith more playing time as Vandersloot’s replacement while they find a viable candidate to fill the vacant roster spot.
Already in trouble, the Sky is about to face a tough week with a mini-road trip that will include visits to the reigning champion New York Liberty; the second-place Atlanta Dream in the Eastern Conference; and the Connecticut Sun. The 2025 season isn’t looking good for Angel Reese & Co.
