Channing Frye is unsure about Cooper Flagg’s talent ahead of the NBA Draft

Former Cavaliers star Channing Frye, who won the NBA title in 2016, didn’t shy away from the conversation about Cooper Flag, the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. The former Cleveland power forward spoke about the Duke star a day before taking the stage alongside NBA Commissioner Adam Silver at the Barclays Center for the aforementioned event.

Cooper Flag had a sensational season with the Duke Blue Devils, demonstrating his potential to the basketball world. He’s been labeled a “generational” prospect capable of becoming a top-tier NBA talent. However, Channing Frye seems to think otherwise.

This is what Channing Frye had to say about Cooper Flagg:

“I don’t think it’s generational. I think he’s going to impact a team like Jaylen Williams did, who took three years to win a title.” He doesn’t rule out Flagg as the ceiling for an all-time talent. But he doesn’t see him on the platform alongside players like Victor Wembanyama (for example), who is a true anomaly.

So, as a rookie, Channing Frye knows all the attention will be on Cooper Flagg in Dallas. But he doesn’t expect him to be the biggest star on the court. “Cooper Flagg isn’t going to be the main player even on this team. So will he be better than AD next year? I don’t think so.”

What is the NBA Draft and what is the format?

The NBA Draft is the process by which teams select players. This process seeks to narrow the gap between teams, taking into account the previous year’s ranking in the draft order. The lower the ranking, the greater the chance of getting the first pick.

The draft will consist of 59 picks in two rounds. The first round will include picks 1 through 30, followed by picks 31 through 59 in the second round. The top 14 picks in the first round were determined by a lottery that included teams that did not qualify for this year’s playoffs. The remainder of the draft is based on winning percentage, from worst to best.
