Celtics’ Jayson Tatum ruled out ahead of Game 2 against Magic

As the Boston Celtics aim to take a 2-0 series lead over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night, they will be doing so without superstar Jayson Tatum.

Boston announced Tatum will be out for Game 2 on Wednesday with a “right distal radius bone bruise.” Tatum presumably suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Game 1 when Magic guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and center Wendell Carter Jr. made contact with him underneath the basket on a play that was ruled a Flagrant 1.

That said, Tatum finished the game, logging 40 minutes. Tatum was then listed as doubtful, and held that tag until about an hour before tip-off of Wednesday’s game.

“Today, he was able to get on the court with the team,” head coach Joe Mazzulla said. “He’s doing everything he can to put himself in position to play.”

But Tatum won’t be available tonight, and Mazulla confirmed he’ll be listed as “day-to-day” moving forward.

Tatum totaled 17 points and 14 rebounds on 8-of-22 shooting from the field (36.4%) in the Celtics’ 103-86 Game 1 win on Sunday.

Tatum dealt with ankle and knee issues at points in the regular season but still managed to appear in 72 games. The Celtics went 8-2 in games without him, but did drop a game to Orlando 108-104 on Dec. 23.

Tatum, a four-time All-NBA honoree, averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, six assists and 1.1 steals per game, while shooting 45.2/34.3/81.4 in the regular season.
