Much of the success the Dallas Cowboys could achieve in the upcoming season hinges on the health of Dak Prescott and the performance of CeeDee Lamb, who is currently the team’s top offensive player. The organization recognizes the importance of their wide receiver, though he’s not generally considered the best in the NFL.
The arrival of George Pickens in Dallas could mean they boast one of the most formidable receiver duos in the NFL, but Lamb will need to prove that the latest wide receiver rankings are completely off the mark.
The ranking doesn’t favor CeeDee Lamb
Ja’Marr Chase overtook Justin Jefferson for the No. 1 spot in ESPN‘s ranking, with CeeDee Lamb slotted at No. 4, as Tyreek Hill is still considered superior to the Cowboys‘ star.
In this context, Jeremy Fowler explains that Lamb‘s numbers are indeed impressive, noting that he’s had to contend with a weak running game and Dak Prescott‘s injuries.
“Lamb has checked many boxes required by an elite receiver. He had a banner season in 2023, with 135 receptions (league-high), 1,749 yards, and 12 touchdowns. He has had no true down years. He’s a perennial All-Pro first- or second-teamer. And he can produce through adversity, including multiple injuries to Dak Prescott and a bad running game,” Fowler wrote.
“Excellent out of the slot, easy mover, can sink and bend,” an NFL personnel evaluator said. “Very good after the catch and excellent ball carrier vision.”
Lamb has amassed 496 receptions, the second-highest total for any player over the last five seasons, trailing only Michael Thomas (510). Additionally, no other receiver in Dallas Cowboys history has recorded at least 10 receptions in 12 games in a single season.
Achieving 101 receptions for 1,194 yards is a monumental stat, especially considering Lamb didn’t always play alongside Dak Prescott, who could be blamed for not elevating Lamb higher in the rankings.
Ultimately, CeeDee Lamb will have the chance to prove he’s the best receiver in the NFL in a season where Prescott is expected to stay healthy and form a dynamic partnership with his new teammate, George Pickens.
