Cedric Mullins leaves Orioles and joins Mets in surprise trade

The New York Mets have acquired center fielder Cedric Mullins from the Baltimore Orioles in a trade aimed at bolstering their outfield defense and depth

The move comes just before the trade deadline, and is already generating great excitement among fans.

Mullins joins a lineup that includes Jeff McNeil and Tyrone Taylor, giving manager Carlos Mendoza multiple options in center field. His arrival represents a commitment to experience and defensive versatility.

Mullins’ legacy in Baltimore

Cedric Mullins was for years one of the faces of the Orioles. With eight seasons in the franchise, he was the longest-serving player on the team, a symbol of the transition from the pre-reconstruction era. His most outstanding season was in 2021, when he achieved the only 30-30 (30 home runs and 30 stolen bases) in franchise history, while also being an All-Star and Silver Slugger winner.

Although his recent numbers have not been as spectacular, Mullins remains a valuable player for his speed, occasional power and defensive ability. In 2025, he is hitting .229 with 15 home runs, 49 RBIs and a .738 OPS in 91 games. His last week with the Orioles was brilliant: he hit .450 with two home runs and outstanding defensive plays, including a catch to rob a home run.

Trade details

In the deal, the Mets receive three pitching prospects: Anthony Nunez (the Mets’ No. 14 prospect), Raimon Gomez (No. 30) and Chandler Marsh. All are right-handed pitchers with projection, indicating that Baltimore is still betting on long-term development.

Nunez, 24, stands out for his slider and changeup, with a combined 1.76 ERA between High-A and Double-A. Gomez, with a fastball that reaches 104 mph, is an explosive but inconsistent arm. Marsh, 22, has been solid at High-A with a 3.45 ERA.

Immediate impact for the Mets

For the Mets, the arrival of Cedric Mullins represents an immediate improvement in defense and speed. His experience and leadership could be key in the final stretch of the season. In addition, his contract expires at the end of the year, which makes him a low-risk acquisition with high potential for impact.

New York is looking to remain competitive in a demanding division, and adding a player with Mullins‘ track record could make the difference in close games. His ability to cover ground and make spectacular plays makes him a valuable asset.

A new chapter for Mullins

This is the first team change in Cedric Mullins‘ career, as he was selected by the Orioles in the 13th round of the 2015 Draft. His departure marks the end of an era in Baltimore, but also opens up a new opportunity with a postseason-aspiring franchise.

The Mets are betting on their talent and experience, while the Orioles continue their renewal process with young prospects. Time will tell who came out on top in this trade, but for now, Mullins is ready to shine at Citi Field.
