It was very apparent what the Dallas Cowboys‘ biggest issue was in 2025: their leaky defense devoid of high-end talent. Everyone knew the defense would hold back the offense last season, and that’s exactly what happened.
In a way, the team’s poor defense overshadowed what was a rebirth of a season for quarterback Dak Prescott. A year after seeing what was already a tough season cut short by injury, Prescott was back to his best self in 2025. Heading into 2026, Cowboys fans aren’t worried about the QB holding the team back in any capacity. But it’s fair to be concerned with how his body will hold up as he enters his age-33 season.
Prescott has already dealt with a multitude of injuries over the past six seasons. The Cowboys have been able to mitigate his absences with decent play from fill-in quarterback Cooper Rush in previous seasons, but he’s no longer an option. That could lead to Jerry Jones and the Dallas front office targeting a quarterback at some point in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Carson Beck considered an ideal team fit for Dallas Cowboys in fifth round
ESPN’s Ben Solak recently pinpointed ideal team fits for the top quarterback in the upcoming draft, and he has Carson Beck as an option for the Cowboys in the fifth round.
The QB2 job is up for grabs in Dallas, with incoming Sam Howell battling incumbent Joe Milton III for the right to back up Dak Prescott. This is not a particularly thrilling QB2 battle…Beck is very much a rhythm/confidence thrower who lets his mistakes compound, but he can also get into a pocket and throw with NFL timing and zip. This is a trait he shares with Prescott, who looks like the league’s best quarterback when he’s hot in the pocket… Beck has maturity and big-game experience, and the Cowboys’ past couple of forays into QB2 development have been heavily indexed on traits (Milton, Trey Lance) — it’s time to zag back to the Cooper Rush side of the aisle.
Beck’s ceiling in the NFL might be limited, but he could very well turn into a capable backup; especially in a QB-friendly system like Brian Schottenheimer‘s Cowboys offense.
