The queen of songwriting just tipped her crown to the new generation’s reigning ruler: Carole King has publicly congratulated Taylor Swift after the pop megastar announced she has officially regained control of her master recordings – a hard-fought victory years in the making.
“You continue to inspire! ,” the Tapestry icon, 83, wrote over a celebratory photo of Swift, 35, in her Instagram Stories on Friday, May 30.
The sweet message came after Swift shared the major milestone with her fans, receiving waves of support from his boyfriend Travis Kelce, Selena Gomez, Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, and millions of Swifties. But King’s words hit differently – especially for an artist who’s long considered the music legend her North Star.
Tay Tay is a die-hard fan of Carole
Swift has never been shy about her deep admiration for King, who was a staple in the Swift household thanks to Taylor’s parents, diehard Carole King fans.
When Swift introduced King at the 2021 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, she declared, “Carole King is the greatest songwriter of all time,” crediting her with teaching artists like herself the value of storytelling, no matter the struggle it takes to be heard.
King, who smiled and laughed during Swift’s touching tribute (especially at the part where Taylor said Tapestry changed the lives of humans and “cats with big dreams”), later returned the love.
King is also a Swiftie at heart
In 2019, she presented Swift with the Artist of the Decade Award at the AMAs, praising her for being one of the rare pop stars whose name appears as the sole songwriter on her tracks. “Her lyrics resonate across generations,” King said. “The best is yet to come.“
