Carmelo Anthony thinks something’s off about Angel Reese’s trade from Chicago to Atlanta

Public reaction has been intense following the blockbuster WNBA trade that sent Angel Reese from the Chicago Sky to the Atlanta Dream in exchange for a package of future draft assets. The deal, which includes multiple first-round selections and swap rights across upcoming drafts, immediately sparked debate about whether Chicago received adequate compensation for a player widely viewed as one of the league’s most influential young stars.

Among the loudest critics was former NBA star Carmelo Anthony, who openly questioned the logic behind the return and suggested the Sky had undervalued both Reese’s on-court production and her broader commercial impact.

The trade structure centers on picks stretching across several seasons, a strategy that carries inherent risk given the uncertainty of draft positioning and player development. Chicago had previously invested significant capital to acquire Reese, including moving up in the draft order and parting with valuable future assets.

That earlier decision made the reversal even more striking, as the franchise appeared to pivot away from a player once positioned as a long-term cornerstone.

League observers have also pointed to reported tension between Reese and the organization following her outspoken criticism of team direction and performance last season, which may have influenced front office calculations during negotiations.

Rising tensions and a divisive decision

Carmelo Anthony addressed the situation on his podcast, “7 PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony,” expressing disbelief at the perceived imbalance of the trade. He argued that Chicago essentially surrendered a high-impact young talent for what he described as speculative future value.

“They got nothing. You got two 2027 picks, a 2026 pick, another 2027 or 2028, and another second-round pick for Angel? Y’all are bugging,” said Anthony.

His remarks quickly circulated among fans and analysts, many of whom echoed similar concerns about whether the Sky maximized their leverage. At the same time, some league insiders have suggested the situation was more complex than a simple talent-for-picks exchange.

According to ESPN reporting, Chicago may have had access to more favorable trade packages but ultimately prioritized sending Reese to a preferred destination. That decision reportedly narrowed negotiations and reduced potential returns.

Beyond the transaction itself, the trade has raised broader questions about Chicago’s long-term direction. Some reports suggested internal frustration within the organization had reached a tipping point, with unnamed sources describing a fractured locker room environment.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Dream are expected to build their offensive identity around Reese, integrating her into a young core aimed at accelerating their climb in the standings.

As both franchises move forward, the deal continues to divide opinion across the league. Regardless of perspective, the trade has already become one of the most talked-about roster moves in recent WNBA history, with long-term consequences that will only become clearer as future drafts unfold.
