The 2026 season has not yet begun and there is already a new controversy surrounding the planning of the Mets, as manager Carlos Mendoza chose to leave one of the most dominant closers of the last decade, Craig Kimbrel, off the New York Mets’ Opening Day roster.

Mets surprise by leaving Craig Kimbrel out

The news was not well received by fans as Kimbrel is an elite arm, so his absence on Opening Day is controversial, but it has more to do with the present than with Craig‘s undoubted legacy. During spring training, the 37-year-old veteran showed clear control problems. In just six innings of work, he walked five batters, a worrying figure for a reliever whose role demands precision in moments of maximum pressure.

In addition, his historically dominant fastball showed a slight drop in velocity, enough reason for Carlos Mendoza to decide to do without him for the start of the season.

Carlos Mendoza prioritizes performance over history

Manager Carlos Mendoza was blunt: the team needs reliable arms from day one. He will play whoever is in better shape, without thinking about the past.

Although Kimbrel was not included on the roster, the organization has not closed the door on him as there is a possibility that he could remain working out at the team’s facilities in Port St. Lucie, honing his mechanics and regaining his feel, keeping him close to the big league team and ready for any eventuality.

Craig Kimbrel’s MLB legacy

Talking about Craig Kimbrel is to talk about one of the most dominant relievers of his generation. He made his debut in 2010 with the Atlanta Braves and quickly became a key piece of the bullpen.

In 2011, he was named the National League Rookie of the Year, cementing a career marked by his distinctive windup, powerful fastball and devastating curveball.

Over the years, he also made his mark with teams such as the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs, racking up saves and cementing a legacy that will be hard to ignore.

Kimbrel’s future in MLB is uncertain, but not closed. His experience and competitive mentality could give him a new opportunity if he manages to regain his level. While it is clear the high expectations that exist in Queens.
