Cardinals’ James Conner Out Indefinitely, RB Set for Ankle Surgery After Being Carted Off Against 49ers

The Cardinals will play out the rest of the 2025 season without their starting running back after losing James Conner to a gruesome ankle injury during a 16-15 Week 3 loss to the 49ers.

Following Sunday’s game, multiple outlets reported Conner will undergo surgery and is out indefinitely, ending his campaign after three games.

Conner’s exit came early in the third quarter after the RB’s leg was wrapped up as he was taken down for a tackle by two 49ers defenders. The nine-year veteran appeared to be in noticeable pain immediately after the play as Arizona’s medical staff tended to him on the field moments later.

Both teams surrounded Conner during the evaluation before he was promptly carted off the field with his lower right leg immobilized. He was subsequently ruled out for the game.

Conner logged nine carries for 22 yards, and three receptions for 15 yards at the time of his exit. Backup Trey Benson took over for Conner in the Arizona backfield, and is expected to lead the way going forward.

In his three games, Conner rushed 32 times for 95 yards and a touchdown, to go with eight receptions for 38 yards and a TD.
