Canelo Alvarez’s team is concerned about positive doping cases

On May 29, it was revealed that Mexican boxer Jaime Munguia had tested positive for a banned substance following his May 4 victory over Bruno Surace, which he referred to as “exogenous testosterone metabolites”. After the subsequent B-sample test also came back positive, his victory over Surace is expected to be overturned, and many expect the Mexican boxer to be suspended for between six months and a year.

Although Munguia faced Saul Alvarez in the ring last May, where Canelo won, they now train together under the guidance of trainer Eddy Reynoso. When Canelo was asked about his teammate’s positive test in May, he said: “I totally agree with Jaime, but only he knows what happened. Eddy [Reynoso] doesn’t feed him.”

The time Canelo Alvarez tested positive for Clenbuterol

Jaime Munguia is far from the first of Reynoso’s pupils with a history of positive tests for banned substances. In fact, Canelo tested positive for traces of clenbuterol ahead of his rematch with Gennady Golovkin in 2018. Munguia’s positive test seems to have prompted a major shift away from Reynoso, which was revealed in a July 14 post by Ring magazine.

“I will work with a team that I can supervise 100%. I have allowed boxers who come to me for training to have their own nutrition and work team, regardless of what my training entails. So what will I do from now on?” Reynoso asked Salvador “Chava” Rodriguez of ESPN Knockout.

Eddy Reynoso’s plans to avoid doping cases

For Canelo Alvarez’s current trainer, working 100 percent with the team is about being able to oversee and direct the actions of the training. Not because the other boxers had bad teams, but so that Eddy can be sure of the dietary and medical activities of the boxers he is going to train. To this end, he is going to consult and get a good nutrition team that is more linked to VADA. And to be closer to those who run VADA to try to do things better.

In other words, Reynoso claims he will take the matter into his own hands to ensure that his fighters are not exposed to contaminated food or anything else that could produce a positive test. As far as Jaime Munguia is concerned, a verdict is expected in the coming weeks to determine whether the Mexican retains his victory or whether it is returned to Bruno Surace and the punishment of six months or a year of punishment.
