For a while, it has felt like Canelo Alvarez has lost his shine in the opinion of many fans. It doesn’t have anything to do with his boxing ability decaying; in fact, Alvarez has looked great in recent fights, despite not having a knockout since 2021. But some fans can’t help but feel he hasn’t pushed himself hard enough since taking a risk with Dmitry Bivol in 2022.

Alvarez has fought some very recognizable names, but none of them have been a match or given any type of show in the ring with Canelo. During negotiations for all of his last five fights, there has been one name that has come up but never gotten any bite from Alvarez: William Scull. Scull has been the mandatory challenger to Canelo’s IBF super middleweight belt for quite a while. Instead, Alvarez relinquished it, opting to not fight the lower-profile Scull.

Who is William Scull?

Whenever Scull’s name came up in rumors and reports, fans couldn’t help but wonder if Alvarez would really ever fight him. Scull isn’t a big name and wouldn’t have delivered the proper numbers for it to make financial sense for Canelo. But on paper, Scull had every right to get a shot at Alvarez.

The 32-year-old is yet to lose through 23 fights in his career. Boxing for most of his pro career in Argentina and Germany, Scull made his United States debut in 2024, defeating Sean Hemphill by unanimous decision at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Later that year, he went back to Germany, but with hardware on his mind. Following Alvarez’s decision to relinquish his IBF title, Scull fought Vladimir Shishkin for the belt and won handily by unanimous decision.

Scull stands at nearly six feet tall and is very muscular. He was born in Cuba but fights out of Berlin. His tough nature and reach advantage over Alvarez could prove troublesome for the Mexican.
