Canelo Alvarez’s fight against Terence Crawford is off to a disastrous start with Dana White to blame

One of the most anticipated fights in recent boxing history is three months away. Canelo Alvarez will put his undisputed belts on the line once again, stepping into the ring against many fans’ pound-for-pound king, Terence Crawford. “Bud” is stepping up two weight classes in order to chase greatness. Given how technically impressive both Alvarez and Crawford are, this could be one of the best pure boxing matches in a while.

With Turki Alalshikh and Dana White behind the scenes, everything is set for this to be a can’t-miss event; so much so that Netflix has picked up the streaming rights for it. Taking place in Las Vegas, the signs are pointing to a jaw-dropping event. But the undercard must deliver for that to happen, and it’s a doubt whether it will.

Turki Alalshikh and Dana White want young and promising prospects for Canelo-Crawford undercard

On the same day that Netflix announced it would be streaming the fight globally, Turki Alalshikh took to X to post the official artwork of the event. While calling it the “fight of the century“, the promoter also listed “young, hungry fighters” who he would like to see on the undercard of the fight. Alalshikh also implored interested boxers to reach out to him.

While it’s always welcomed for young, talented boxers to get the chance to show their skills on the big stage, fans want to see a stacked card with established fighters in order to make sticking it out until the main event worth it. Putting many fighters who don’t have a lot of name recognition could put the event at risk.

In the eyes of Ken Woods of Boxing News 24, White is partially to blame for this strategy shift. White has used this type of undercard model for UFC events, focusing on prospects for the bouts in the lead-up to the main event, which is always the main attraction. White could be trying to impart some of his UFC strategy to boxing, in his first major crossover promotion.
