Canelo Alvarez vs David Benavidez: Will there be a fight at 168 pounds or will they go their separate ways?

Canelo Alvarez’s fall against Terence Crawford marked a turning point in his career. Although he lost his crown, he remains a key figure in world boxing. Turki Alalshikh, director of the Riyadh season, asked the question that shook the boxing world: can David Benavidez return to 168 pounds? This simple reflection opened up a debate that directly touches on Canelo’s future, his multi-million dollar contract and his ability to continue to be a box office magnet.

Benavidez’s stance

David Benavidez dispelled any doubts in a recent interview. With humor, he dodged the pressure about a possible return to super middleweight, but then he was clear: he is no longer interested in 168 pounds. His ambition is in the light heavyweight and cruiserweight divisions, with names like Beterbiev, Bivol and Zurdo Ramirez in his sights. In that field, he feels comfortable and, above all, motivated. The announcement of his fight against Anthony Yarde in November confirms that his path is no longer linked to Canelo’s in the division they once shared.

Limited options for Canelo

For Canelo, the situation is more complicated. His contract with Riyadh Season still requires him to fight two more times, with a purse that could exceed $100 million if he makes a triumphant return. However, he is not guaranteed a rematch with Crawford, as his last contract lacked that clause. This forces him to look at other opponents, from emerging names such as Christian M’billi or Jose Resendiz to an eventual reunion with Benavidez, if he reconsiders his decision. The road will not be easy, and the margin for error is minimal.

Alalshikh’s vision

Turki Alalshikh has proven to be a key architect in today’s boxing world, moving pieces to generate the most lucrative cards in Riyadh. His interest in Benavidez and in keeping Canelo within the media radar responds not only to the sport, but also to the business. A Canelo vs. Benavidez fight would have been the dream of millions, but with the “Mexican Monster’s” change of category, the possible combinations are reduced. Even so, Alalshikh keeps cards on the table, and it is not ruled out that he will manage to attract Canelo towards an unexpected route.

While fans dream of a clash between Canelo and Benavidez, the reality is that their paths diverge. Benavidez is betting on glory in heavier divisions, seeking world-class champions at 175 pounds. Canelo, on the other hand, must rebuild his legacy in the super middleweights and find a rematch that justifies his status as a box office draw. Time will tell if their paths cross again, but for now, the question remains: will Canelo’s redemption be greater than Benavidez’s conquest of new territory?
