Canelo Alvarez is preparing for a new chapter in his career, both inside and outside the ring. At 35 years of age, and with a fight against Terence Crawford on the horizon, the Mexican boxer already has clear plans for his retirement and these may not be to the liking of his former promoter, Oscar De La Hoya.
In a recent interview with CNN en EspaƱol, the Mexican fighter revealed that he plans to hang up his gloves at the age of 36 or 37. However, his retirement from boxing does not mean that he will leave the sport. Canelo expressed his desire to become a promoter, but in a “very different” way.
Canelo’s plans for the future
Regarding the question of whether he would support a new boxer who may appear in the future, Canelo was clear: “Yes, of course. One always comes out, and I would love to support him. If one day I become a promoter, I would like to be able to help the fighter in a very different way.”
“I would like to be a promoter to help and teach the fighter how it is, how he has to manage not only his career as a fighter, but also his business,” added the Mexican, who has a very clear vision of what he would like to do in the not too distant future.
This vision of Canelo contrasts strongly with the relationship he had with Oscar De La Hoya, from whom he separated after years of conflict. Apparently, Canelo wants to prevent future fighters from going through the same difficulties that he faced and that is why he decided to look for another way to not be together anymore.
Live in the present
Meanwhile, Canelo’s longtime trainer Eddy Reynoso confirmed his pupil’s plans for the coming years. After the fight against Crawford, Canelo is expected to seek a rematch against Dmitry Bivol, the only boxer to have beaten him in 2022. Reynoso is confident that Saul can reverse that result and it is rumored that the fight could take place in February or May next year.
With a well-defined final path in boxing and a new role as a businessman and promoter in mind, Canelo Alvarez is preparing for an impressive end to his career. The Mexican knows that the end is getting closer and he is quite prepared to face it and continue to make headlines for a long time in whatever role he sees fit.
