There’s a reason Canelo Alvarez has earned the nickname “Payday“, stemming from en epic press conference moment with Demetrius Andrade. The Mexican superstar sells out any arena he fights in, helping opponents earn a big chunk of money. He also has countless endorsements outside of the ring, ranging from adult beverages to Call of Duty. Canelo is everywhere, but perhaps his most exciting venture has been his partnership with “Undisputed“.
Undisputed is the first licensed boxing video game that has released since Fight Night Champion in 2011. The game has been rumored to come out for some time, with Canelo being revealed as the cover athlete all the way back in May of 2021. Now, the time has finally come for the game to drop, and Alvarez has made sure to get fully behind it.
With the game’s official release coming on Friday, Alvarez posted a trailer video for it with the caption: “Proud to be on the cover of the first major boxing video game in over 10 years“. In the trailer, Canelo knocks out an opponent with an uppercut and then sports two belts post-fight, one of which is the official WBC belt and the other being an “undisputed” branded belt.
Boxing fans don’t love how the Undisputed video game looks
Despite fans finally getting a brand new boxing game, the post was met with some disappointment and negativity.
- “This game is dogs**t but we have no other choice”
- “These graphics look like it was made for the Nintendo Wii”
- “Yo the graphics for this game never made it past fight night round 3”
As if the game getting backlash wasn’t enough, another commenter responded with a shot at Canelo himself: “I wonder if the game is realistic and is coded to fight everyone but David Benavidez“.
It likely wasn’t the reception Alvarez was expecting, but he’s used to dealing with criticism. Plus, he’s the one gracing the cover of the game, marking another feather in his cap as “the face of boxing“.
